Most "best honeymoon resort" lists rank resorts. That’s the wrong question. The right resort depends on what kind of honeymoon the two of you actually want: the do-nothing week, the overwater bucket-list moment, the one with a town and nightlife nearby, or the one where you’d be bored by day three without an adventure on the calendar.
These are the resorts I send honeymooners to most in Mexico and the Caribbean, sorted by the kind of couple each one fits, plus the room categories that are actually worth the upgrade.
I’ve planned over 100 honeymoons, and the biggest lesson is that matching the resort to your personality as a couple matters more than any ranking.
Quick answer
- Overwater villa without flying to the South Pacific: Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Private plunge pool and real quiet: Excellence Playa Mujeres or Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres, near Cancun
- Social energy with a town nearby: Secrets Moxché in Playa del Carmen, or Impression Moxché by Secrets if you want butler service
- Adventure built into the price: Hotel Xcaret Arte, Riviera Maya
How I match a couple to a honeymoon resort
Before I ever suggest a resort, I ask four things:
- How much travel time are you willing to trade for the view? Cancun is about two and a half hours nonstop from DFW. Smaller islands often mean a connection.
- Do you want to leave the resort? Some couples want zero plans. Others want a town, an excursion, or a cenote.
- Is the room the vacation? For some couples a private pool or overwater villa is the whole point. For others it’s a place to sleep between the beach and dinner.
- When are you traveling? Season changes everything from pricing to beach conditions, and seaweed on the Mexican Caribbean coast tends to be heavier in the warmer months, though it varies year to year.
Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Best for: couples who want the overwater villa moment without a 20-plus hour trip to Bora Bora or the Maldives.
Sandals Saint Vincent opened in March 2024 with 301 rooms on about 50 acres in the eastern Caribbean, and it introduced the brand’s first two-story overwater villas. The Vincy Overwater Two-Story Villas sit over the water with a rooftop lounge on the upper level.
The room worth the upgrade: the overwater villa is the whole reason to choose this resort. If the budget doesn’t stretch that far, I’d usually point you to a different Sandals rather than book a standard room here.
Know before you go: Saint Vincent is not a quick nonstop from Texas the way Cancun is, so plan on a connection into Argyle International Airport. Overwater villa guests get a boat transfer when they arrive or depart before dusk, which is a good reason to choose flights carefully.
Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres
Best for: the do-nothing honeymoon. Couples who want privacy, a plunge pool, and not much else on the agenda.
Both resorts are adults-only and sit side by side in Playa Mujeres, a quieter area north of the Cancun Hotel Zone, roughly 40 minutes from the airport.
The room worth the upgrade: the Excellence Club Two-Story Rooftop Terrace Suites. You get a private rooftop terrace with a plunge pool, plus Excellence Club access to a private lounge and club-only restaurants and bars. At Excellence Coral, look at the Beachfront Honeymoon Two-Story Rooftop Terrace Suite with a private pool.
Know before you go: decide whether you want Excellence Club before you compare prices. A club suite and a standard junior suite here are two very different honeymoons, and comparing them side by side on price alone leads couples to the wrong room.
Insider tip: Bali beds are first come, first served, or you can pay $100 per day to reserve one.
Secrets Moxché and Impression Moxché by Secrets
Best for: couples who want energy, rooftop pools, and the option to spend an evening in town.
Secrets Moxché opened in Playa del Carmen in April 2022 with 485 suites, all adults-only, about 10 minutes from Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue). It has more of a beach club personality than a sleepy one.
The room worth the upgrade: Impression Moxché by Secrets, the resort-within-a-resort tower in the same complex. Every guest gets a large suite, butler service, and access to VIP restaurants, bars, and rooftop pools. If you want the Moxché energy but with somewhere quieter to retreat, this is it.
Know before you go: if you’re deciding between Secrets resorts, my Resort Showdown pages break down Secrets Maroma vs Secrets Moxché and Secrets Moxché vs Secrets Akumal side by side.
Insider tip: the hidden speakeasy, Gypsy Club, is tucked behind the resort pharmacy. It’s an easy one to miss if nobody tells you it’s there.
Hotel Xcaret Arte
Best for: active couples who want adventure without booking and paying for every excursion separately.
Hotel Xcaret Arte is an all-suite resort in the Riviera Maya with 900 suites inspired by Mexican artists. Its All-Fun Inclusive concept includes unlimited access and transportation to the Grupo Xcaret parks and tours, including Xcaret, Xel-Há, and Xplor, plus round-trip airport transfers.
The room worth the upgrade: the swim-up oceanfront suites, if you want your own pool access between park days.
Know before you go: the adults-only policy here is 16 and up, not 18, so it isn’t as strictly adult as the other resorts on this list. Some parks also require reservations through the concierge, so don’t assume you can just show up.
Insider tip: do a rooftop crawl. Each Casa’s rooftop has its own vibe, so make an evening of hopping between them.

Questions honeymooners ask me before booking
When should we book our honeymoon? Nine to twelve months out if you have your heart set on a specific room category. Overwater villas, rooftop plunge pool suites, and swim-up suites have far less inventory than standard rooms, and they go first.
Is all-inclusive worth it for a honeymoon? For most couples, yes. You stop doing math every time you order a drink or dinner, and at the resorts on this list the restaurants are good enough that you won’t feel like you’re settling.
Can we honeymoon at the same resort as our destination wedding? Yes, and many couples do. A common move is to stay on after your guests leave and switch to a sister resort or a better room category for the honeymoon portion, so it feels like a separate trip.
Are these resorts really adults-only? Sandals is couples-only. Excellence and Secrets are adults-only. Hotel Xcaret Arte allows guests 16 and up, which is worth knowing if you want a strictly adult atmosphere.
How long should a honeymoon be? I usually recommend at least seven nights. The first day is travel and the last is packing, so anything shorter means you’re leaving just as you start to relax.
